Ants in the house in Islam: a sign? Is killing ants a sin?

When ants appear at home, some say "blessing is coming" and others "it is a bad sign". Do these beliefs have any basis in Islam, and how should ants be treated?

Are ants in the house a sign?

There is nothing in the Quran or authentic hadith saying that ants in the house bring blessing, provision or harm. Treating an animal's appearance at home as a good or bad sign is close to the belief in omens that Islam rejects (Sahih al-Bukhari 5757). The ant in the Quran

The 27th surah of the Quran is named an-Naml, "the Ant". It tells how an ant warned the other ants as the army of Prophet Sulayman approached, and how Sulayman smiled at its words and thanked Allah (an-Naml 27:18-19). In the Quran, the ant is a beautiful example of order, solidarity and responsibility.

Is killing ants a sin?

• The Prophet ﷺ forbade killing four creatures, and the ant is one of them (Sunan Abi Dawud 5267).
• A hadith tells of a prophet who burned a whole ant colony because one ant bit him, and Allah rebuked him: "Because one ant bit you, you burned a nation that glorifies Allah?" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3019).
• When the Prophet ﷺ saw a burned ant colony, he said: "None should punish with fire except the Lord of the fire" (Sunan Abi Dawud 2675). So burning ants is forbidden.

Scholars allow removing the harm of pests that damage a home and cannot be kept away by other means, but the rule is to drive them away first, not to kill without need, and never to burn them.

How to get rid of ants at home

1. Keep food covered and clean up sugary and greasy crumbs right away.
2. Find the ants' trail and seal cracks around walls, windows and doors.
3. Use natural repellents: vinegar, lemon juice or cinnamon break the scent trails ants follow and keep them away.
4. Reduce damp; leaks and humidity attract ants.
5. If the problem is large, ask a professional for methods that do not burn the ants or harm them needlessly.
