You

I saw a deceased relative in my dream. What does it mean?

Seeing a relative who has passed away is a very common dream and one that touches the heart. In the Islamic tradition of dream interpretation, its meaning is determined by the state, face, clothing and words of the deceased; a loved one seen smiling and well dressed is usually interpreted as good.

The symbols in your dream

  • Seeing them smiling and at peace: Points to them being in a good state with Allah and to matters becoming easier for you too.
  • Seeing them dressed in green or white: Since green is considered the clothing of the people of Paradise, it is interpreted as a good sign of their state.
  • Seeing the deceased come back to life: Interpreted as relief after hardship and the revival of a matter that seemed closed.
  • Them giving you something: Giving you bread, fruit or a gift is interpreted as provision coming from an unexpected place.
  • Them looking sad or asking for something: Understood as a sign that they need prayer, charity or a good deed done on their behalf.

Seeing a deceased person in a dream: other variations

  • Kissing your late parents' hands in a dream: Points to your needs being met and a weight on your conscience easing.
  • A deceased person speaking in a dream: What the deceased says in a dream is true, because they are in the abode of truth; heed their words.
  • A deceased person giving you money in a dream: Points to being freed from an injustice.
  • Seeing your late father in court in a dream: Points to an unpaid debt or a right owed to someone, left by the father; settle it and give charity on his behalf.
  • Seeing a deceased person alive in a dream: It is most often longing; what they say and give decides the meaning.

In short

Seeing someone who has passed away is often a reflection of longing and of the bond in your heart; it is also a reminder that invites you to pray for them and to do good on their behalf. If they looked peaceful and full of light, the dream is considered glad tidings both for them and for you. If their words carried advice, carrying that advice into your life is the best response to the dream.

Advice

  • Recite Al-Fatiha for them, pray for them and give sadaqah on their behalf.
  • If the dream was good, thank Allah and share it only with people who love you.
  • If the dream saddened you, seek refuge in Allah from the evil of Shaytan and do not tell it to anyone; it will not harm you.
  • If they left a good deed unfinished or ties with relatives, continue them yourself.

Allah knows best the truth of dreams.

Death

Dying in a dream may point to a decline in religion and a rise in worldly standing; some interpreters read death as travel and moving, others as marriage.

  • Dying and coming back to life: Wealth after poverty, or repentance; for a traveller, a safe return
  • Dying without mourning, shroud or bier: Long life; a warning about slackness in faith
  • Being carried on shoulders and not buried: Overcoming enemies; if fitting, attaining a position
  • A deceased person saying something in a dream: What they say is true, for they are in the abode of truth
  • Coming out of the grave: Repentance
