Seeing a dog in a dream: what does it mean in Islam?

Seeing a dog in a dream is most often interpreted in the Islamic tradition of dream interpretation as a weak enemy who is harsh or foul-mouthed toward you. But the dog's behaviour changes the meaning; a loyal, calm dog or a puppy carries much more positive meanings.

The symbols in your dream

• A barking dog: Interpreted as a hurtful word or remark you may hear from someone.
• Being bitten by a dog: The harm from it is as big as the bite; it is usually a passing difficulty.
• A dog tearing your clothes: Someone may talk behind your back and attack your reputation.
• Chasing away or defeating the dog: Interpreted as getting the better of someone who wants to harm you.
• A puppy or a loyal dog: Interpreted as a beloved child or a trustworthy friend.
• Feeding a dog bread: Points to an increase in provision.

Seeing a dog in a dream: other variations

• Throwing stones at dogs in a dream: Points to stopping a fight before it starts.
• Chasing away a dog in a dream: Points to beating an enemy without taking the bait.
• Overpowering an attacking dog in a dream: Points to overcoming the person who causes you trouble.
• A dog entering the house in a dream: Points to slander, arguments and annoyances entering the home.
• A dog running away in a dream: Points to an enemy moving away from you.
• Hunting with dogs in a dream: Points to reaching your wish and a position.

In short

A dog dream is mostly a warning to be attentive: there may be someone around you who could upset you with their words or who looks at you with envy. This dream is not seen to frighten you but so that you stay careful. If you drove the dog away or it could not harm you, it points to you getting past such difficulties easily.

Advice

• If the dream unsettled you, seek refuge in Allah from the evil of Shaytan, lightly spit three times to your left, and do not tell the dream to anyone; it will not harm you.
• Do not answer hurtful words with hurtful words; patience and kind speech are the best protection.
• Feed an animal; mercy widens provision.

Allah knows best the truth of dreams.
