Waking up with the feeling that you had a beautiful dream, but not being able to remember it, is very common. Sometimes we even say "I never dream". Why are dreams forgotten, and should you worry about a dream you cannot remember?
Why are dreams forgotten?
Sleep research shows that most dreams happen in the stage of sleep called REM, and that people dream several times every night. But while we sleep, the brain is slow to turn new experiences into lasting memories, so most dreams fade within moments of waking. The main things that make dreams harder to remember are:
- Waking suddenly to an alarm and jumping straight into the day
- Too little or irregular sleep
- Heavy stress and tiredness
- Checking your phone as soon as you wake up
So most people who say "I never dream" do dream; they simply do not remember.
What Islam says about a forgotten dream
- Forgetting is not a fault or a sin. Remembering dreams is not a religious duty.
- Do not fill in the parts you forgot. The Prophet ﷺ warned that whoever claims to have seen a dream he did not see will face a heavy reckoning (Sahih al-Bukhari 7042). Filling the gaps of a dream with guesses and telling it as seen comes close to this warning; tell only what you remember.
- What you remember is enough. If you remember only one scene, it is interpreted by that scene.
- There is no need to worry. Dreams are of three kinds: glad tidings from Allah, a frightening from Shaytan, and what comes from a person's own thoughts (Sahih Muslim 2263). A dream you do not remember will not harm you.
Tips for remembering your dreams
- Keep a notebook or notes app by your bed. Write down what you remember as soon as you wake, before getting up.
- Stay still for a few seconds with your eyes closed. Keeping the same position while you recall the dream helps.
- Sleep regularly and enough. People whose sleep is not interrupted and who are rested remember their dreams better.
- Make an intention and recite your duas before sleeping. See Duas before sleeping.
- If you had a good dream, praise Allah and share it only with people who love you (Sahih al-Bukhari 6985).
If you remember something
Even if you remember only part of a dream, you can look up its symbol among the Islamic dream meanings or read how dreams are interpreted in general in How are dreams interpreted in Islam?.
And Allah knows best.
