"When will my dream come true?" is one of the most common questions about dreams. Looking at the Quran and authentic hadith, we find there is no fixed time for a dream to come true.
There is no set time
- As a child, Prophet Yusuf saw eleven stars, the sun and the moon bowing to him. The dream came true many years later, when his family bowed before him in Egypt: "Father, this is the fulfilment of my dream of long ago; my Lord has made it come true" (Quran 12:100).
- The Prophet saw in a dream that they would enter the Sacred Mosque. It came true not in the year the Companions expected but the following year, and the Quran confirmed it (Quran 48:27).
These examples show that a righteous dream may come true the next day or years later, and that its timing belongs to Allah.
Which dreams come true?
The dream that comes true is the righteous dream. Bad dreams from Satan and dreams arising from one's own thoughts carry no news to be fulfilled (Sahih Muslim 2263a). See Types of dreams in Islam for the difference.
- "When the time draws near, a believer's dream will hardly ever be false" (Sahih al-Bukhari 7017).
- "The truest of you in dreams are the truest of you in speech" (Sahih Muslim 2263a). Truthfulness is linked to the truth of dreams.
Are morning dreams more truthful?
There is a narration in al-Tirmidhi that the truest dreams are those seen before dawn, but hadith scholars considered its chain weak. So it is not correct to say a morning dream will certainly come true. Still, the pre-dawn hours are among the most blessed of the night, when the heart is calmest.
Dreams on Friday night or special nights
There is no authentic evidence that dreams seen on Friday night, blessed nights or at particular hours are more truthful. A dream's truth depends on whether it is a righteous dream, not on the day it was seen.
While you wait
- Be patient. Yusuf's dream waited for years.
- Pray and ask for its good. Receive a good dream joyfully as good news.
- Do not put your life on hold for a dream. For important decisions, consult others and pray istikhara.
- Give thanks when it comes true. When his dream was fulfilled, Yusuf first thanked his Lord.
Allah knows best the truth and timing of dreams.
